“We absolutely love our wedding video. Hannah captured lots of little details, even things we didn’t see ourselves. We’re blown away.”
Filming a wedding is an absolute honour, so I was thrilled when the bride and groom, Ed and Hannah Greasley, asked me to capture their special day.
I see my wedding videographer role as a bit like a friendly spy (if such a thing exists!) Blending into the crowd, observing intimate conversations and behind-the-scenes-moments, and turning them into a video that lasts forever.
Natural, documentary-style wedding videos
As a wedding videographer, knowing the vibe and look a couple wants from their video is important to me. Ed and Hannah weren’t keen on formal group shots, which matched my filming style perfectly: natural, unobtrusive and behind-the-scenes, with no posed shot in sight.
When I met Ed and Hannah, Hannah said she wanted shots from morning to evening until the guests hit the dancefloor. This covered getting ready in the morning, walking down the aisle, signing the registry, speeches, the evening do, and everything between.
I explained the type of cameras I use and where I’d position myself to get the best footage without getting in the way. Ed and I chatted about how I’d fit him with a mic to pick up the sound from the ceremony and speeches.
“I was blown away by how clear I sounded on the video,” recalls Ed. “You can hear everything: my vows, my wedding speech…even the funny advice my best friend gave me. Hannah fitted a mic to the lapel of my jacket, but you couldn’t even see it.
“Hannah knows about all the technical things that go into making a wedding video, the things I wouldn’t have thought about.”
An experienced and open-minded wedding videographer
The bride, Hannah was relieved I would need minimal direction on the day. All she had to do was tell me about the key moments she wanted me to focus on. Other than that, the couple gave me free rein to capture their special day.
“Hannah fitted into our wedding so well; she was like another wedding guest, just the one with the best cameras! She was so respectful and didn’t fuss around us. We just left her to it.”
Hannah, the bride
As an experienced wedding videographer, I know the kind of moments I’m looking for. But every wedding is unique, and I love filming those unexpected happy-tear-filled, laugh-out-loud moments that pop up unexpectedly.
Hannah and Ed’s wedding had it all: The joyful hugs between friends and family; the bride getting ready surrounded by friends; happy-tired guests kicking off shoes after a night of dancing. Hannah and Ed both mentioned how nice it’s been to be able to watch the video and remember their wedding day. “We loved the bit during the ceremony when Ed was trying to put my ring on and he whispers, “We need a bit of WD-40 here!” It’s so funny! It’s so clever how Hannah put this into the finished video.”
Wedding videos to share with friends and family
The beauty of a wedding film is that it can be watched again and again. Hannah and Ed now have a lasting memory to show friends and family. A video that not only shows the love between two people, but also all the love that’s being shared between their family and friends who are there to celebrate their marriage. It all lends itself perfectly to video.
“My grandparents had to leave early,” Hannah remembers, “so they missed some of the wedding. We sent them the wedding video when it was ready, and they said it was like they were actually there – they loved it.
“Ed and I must have watched it back something like 20 times. Hannah sent it to us on a memory stick and in digital format to load to Facebook, so all our friends have watched it. So many people said how amazing the video was.”
Inclusive wedding videos for all kinds of love
I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to film all kinds of weddings and witness the love being shared between all types of people. Making sure I picked up on the little things at Hannah and Ed’s wedding was the key to giving them an accurate, authentic record of the day.
I enjoyed editing Ed and Hannah’s wedding video as much as I did filming it. Looking through a full day’s worth of footage to create an 11-minute video was no mean feat, but it’s all part of a process that I thoroughly enjoy. Once you add the music (which I ensured perfectly matched the vibe of their wedding), you’ve got yourself a beautiful story playing out on film.
“Hannah managed to get footage of things that Ed and I didn’t see at the wedding, such as the guests arriving and the little private moments. The day goes so fast, and she captured absolutely everything that mattered to us and more.”
